Introduction to dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular anti-aging treatment that can reverse the signs of aging by adding volume to the skin. They effectively smooth out wrinkles and lines, restore lost volume, and plump up the lips. Dermal fillers are made from natural or synthetic materials injected into the dermis or middle layer of skin. This layer contains collagen and elastin, which provide support and elasticity to the skin.

Our bodies produce less collagen and elastin as we age, leading to wrinkles, sagging skin, and volume loss. Dermal fillers work by replacing lost collagen and elastin, restoring the skin's youthful appearance.

There is no downtime required after injections; however, we always recommend giving yourself at least two weeks between your session and any significant event to be on the safe side.

There are many different types of dermal fillers available, each with its unique properties:

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the body. It helps to keep skin hydrated and plump. Dermal fillers that contain hyaluronic acid are used to treat a variety of concerns, including wrinkles, fine lines, and volume loss.

This type of dermal filler is the most common and can be used for lips and cheeks and improve any deep lines or folds not caused by muscle movement.

Blackbird offers the following Hyaluronic Acid fillers:

  • Belotero Balance by Merz: outstanding for finer lines and wrinkles

  • Versa Plus and Versa Lips Plus by Revanesse: provides a broad spectrum of uses depending on the targeted areas. This is our most frequently used filler and can also be used in the cheeks and midface areas.

  • Restylane Lyft, Defyne, Refyne, Kysse by Galderma: offers a wide range of benefits depending on the targeted areas. The different Galderma fillers can be used for every area of the face.

Calcium-Based Fillers

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is a soft tissue filler that is entirely biodegradable. It lasts a long time but is not permanent.

Blackbird offers the following Calcium-Based Fillers:

  • Radiesse by Merz: not only does it act as a filler, but it also stimulates the client's collagen production and elastin! We use it mainly in the cheek areas.

Collagen-Based Fillers

Collagen is another substance that naturally occurs in the body. It is the main structural protein found in the skin. Collagen-based dermal fillers can help to replenish lost collagen and improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Blackbird does not currently offer collagen-based fillers.

Introduction to lip fillers

A lip filler is a dermal filler formulated specifically to add volume and fullness to the lips. Lip fillers restore the natural shape and contour of the lips and can correct lip asymmetry and improve the appearance of fine lines around the mouth.

Our most commonly used lip filler is Revanesse Lips Plus. It gives a very natural appearance to the lips and causes less swelling and bruising than some other options. We also use Galderma Kysse, which is slightly more expensive but gives a more dramatic appearance to the lips and lasts longer than Revanesse.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dermal Fillers

How long do dermal fillers last?

The answer depends upon the dermal filling that was used. Depending on how much you fill dermal tissue, dermal fillers can last 12 months.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Dermal fillers are considered safe; however, side effects may exist. The dermal filler procedure is performed by an experienced medical professional. Most commonly found problems may be skin irritation, rash, swelling, and slight bruising.

How long do lips fillers last?

Lip fillers generally last 12 to 18 months. However, this varies by the time and the rate of the metabolic process.

Do lip fillers damage your lips?

Because lip fillers are comprised of materials that occur naturally in the body, they naturally break down over time. A skilled injector can apply the right amount without overstretching your lips. To achieve desired results, it may take several syringes over a period of months to a year.

Can fillers be reversed, or are they permanent?

Yes, hyaluronic fillers can be reversed! If a Blackbird client experiences a vascular occlusion (when blood is unable to pass through a blood vessel) or another adverse outcome, or if the client is unhappy with the outcome where we performed the initial injections, there is no charge for using hyaluronidase to reverse.

Contact us for current pricing if you need us to reverse a filler done by another med spa.

Calcium-based and collagen-based fillers are not reversible, but both generally fade within one to two years.

What is Hyaluronidase, and what is it used for?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that can be injected directly into the area where the filler was injected that works to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers. We use this in combination with warm compresses and massage and sometimes can use aspirin and nitropaste to assist in the dissolving process.
