Please read the following details to ensure that your goals align with the services we offer.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) usually involves estrogen, progesterone, and sometimes other hormones. While traditional HRT has specific contraindications, not being a candidate for this treatment does not mean there are no alternatives. There are several effective options available to manage menopause symptoms and promote wellness before, during, and after the menopause transition.
Contraindications for Traditional Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Traditional HRT is not appropriate for everyone. Whether this therapy is suitable depends on factors like your age, medical history, and the type of HRT considered.
If you have any of the following conditions, you should not use traditional HRT. However, many non-traditional therapies are available to help women maintain good health and manage symptoms affecting their quality of life during menopause. At Blackbird Wellness, our aim is to enhance the lives of all women—even when traditional hormone therapy isn’t an option.
Hormone-dependent cancers: Anyone with a current or past diagnosis of breast, uterine, endometrial, or other estrogen-sensitive cancers should avoid HRT.
Active or recent blood clots: If you've experienced spontaneous blood clots, HRT isn't recommended. Some blood clots that occur under certain circumstances may not affect eligibility for HRT.
A personal history of heart attack or stroke makes HRT unsuitable.
Unexplained vaginal bleeding: The cause of abnormal bleeding must be identified before considering HRT.
Women with liver disease shouldn’t take HRT.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: HRT is not safe if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

This consultation is very individualized. Whether hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, joint pain or one of the other common complaints are present, we hope to unpack the treatments best for the individual.
No two women will experience the same symptoms at the same time during the menopause transition. The goal is to educate the client on available options to best manage her individual symptoms, or optimize health prior to symptom occurrence which can decrease symptoms. You do not have to be symptomatic to benefit from this consultation.
-
Lab work is not required before the consultation. It is likely some labs will be recommended but not required after the individual consultation.
-
Menopause is defined as 12 full months without a menstrual cycle. Every day after those 12 months is considered postmenopause, while the years leading up to this point are known as perimenopause. Perimenopausal symptoms can begin and fluctuate as early as the mid-30s for some women.
-
Various non-hormonal options are available for women who are not HRT candidates. Many women report significant improvement in quality of life after start of the non-hormonal options we offer at Blackbird Wellness.
-
Clients will never be rushed through this consultation. The typical timeframe is between 1-2 hours. The goal is for every client to leave the consultation with more understanding of current guidelines and recommendations and with an individualized plan of care.
Any current lab results obtained within the past 12 months may be helpful. Gynecological history, including pap smear date and results, and mammogram dates and results, are needed prior to HRT start.
-
Lifestyle changes can be very beneficial to the menopause transition. There is much information available confirming that women who embrace even small positive changes report significant improvement in quality of life.
